Lissataba Nature Reserve – “View of the Mountain”
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Northern Drakensberg, Lissataba Nature Reserve derives its name from the Tsonga word meaning “view of the mountain”. The reserve stretches over 2,542 hectares of pristine acacia bushveld, characterised by rugged rocky outcrops, impressive koppies, and sweeping mountain and river views.

Privately owned and strictly exclusive, Lissataba is home to 54 shareholders with approximately 50 privately owned lodges, nestled discreetly into the natural landscape. The reserve exists solely for the enjoyment of homeowners and their guests, ensuring a tranquil, low-density bushveld experience.

Location & Setting

Situated near Hoedspruit and within close proximity to the Kruger National Park, Lissataba enjoys an enviable position with approximately 5 km of Olifants River frontage. Due to not being a “Big Five” reserve, this allows owners the rare privilege of walking, cycling, and trail running—offering an intimate connection with the bush and its smaller, often overlooked wildlife.

Lifestyle & Activities
• Over 150 km of established game-drive tracks
• Walking, hiking, cycling, and trail running routes
• Numerous scenic look-out points and picnic spots
• Bird hides and private campsite for owners
• Four permanent earth dams providing water for wildlife and excellent game viewing
• River access

Community & Management

Established over 40 years ago, Lissataba is a mature and well-run reserve with a strong emphasis on ecological integrity and financial sustainability. Governance is overseen by a Board of Directors elected annually by shareholders, while day-to-day operations are managed by an experienced management team supported by conservation staff.

Lissataba forms part of the Blyde Olifants Conservancy (12,000 ha), an initiative aimed at preserving the bushveld, facilitating wildlife movement, and limiting further commercial agricultural expansion in sensitive areas.

Development & Infrastructure
Development is carefully confined to one corner of the reserve and comprises:
• 16 river stands
• 38 bush stands
• Average stand size of approximately 7,500 m²

Each site is serviced with water and electricity, with a monthly levy covering reserve management, security, fencing, game management, and infrastructure maintenance.

Architectural guidelines ensure a harmonious aesthetic, featuring:
• Thatch roofs
• Natural stone, klinker brick, or wooden homes
• Earth-toned finishes
• Single-storey design
• No exterior lighting at night
• Indigenous landscaping only

Lodges may accommodate up to 10 beds, and owners may keep a private 4×4 game-viewing vehicle, stored at the administration centre if desired.

Central Facilities

The administration centre includes:
• Clubhouse with pool table, television, bar, library, and education centre
• Swimming pool
• Five thatched rondavels with shared kitchen for owners’ guests
• Undercover vehicle parking
• Fuel pumps
• Small shop with basic essentials
• Cleaning and laundry services

Wildlife & Conservation
Lissataba plays a vital conservation role along the Olifants River corridor, supporting biodiversity across adjoining reserves such as Balule and Kruger National Park.

• Birds in Reserve Project (BIRP) in partnership with UCT and BirdLife South Africa
