Thinking of Selling Your Home? Here’s What You Need to Know

Selling your home can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. In a recent interview on Radio Islam International, Eva August, CEO of Century 21 South Africa, shared down-to-earth advice on how to make your home more sellable—without breaking the bank.

Eva reminded us that most people don’t sell their homes for fun. “Often, it’s because of life changes—death, divorce, retrenchment, or relocation,” she said. “So when it’s time to sell, your home needs to work for you. It needs to sell well, and quickly.”

The good news? Most homes don’t need massive renovations to attract buyers. A bit of decluttering, fixing a few things around the house, freshening up the garden, and adding a warm touch—like a pleasant scent or clean finishes—can go a long way.

One powerful insight Eva shared is that up to 80% of home-buying decisions are driven by women. “If you’re serious about selling, stage your home with her in mind,” she said. “Clean, tidy, light-filled spaces, especially in the kitchen and garden, help create an emotional connection—and that’s what sells.”

She also encouraged sellers to do their research, compare prices in their neighbourhood, and speak to professional agents who can offer an honest, market-based valuation—rather than relying on emotional estimates.

And finally, her best advice? “Take care of your home like it takes care of you. Maintain it monthly, just like you would a date night. That way, when the time comes to sell, you’re ready.”

Thinking of selling your home? Maybe not today, but someday. And when that day comes, a little preparation now can make all the difference.
