National Sea Rescue Institute: Station 14

Those who are familiar with the town of Plettenberg Bay are sure to agree that some of the big attractions to this beautiful town include the favourable climate, forests, mountain views and very importantly – the big, temperamental blue ocean that offers us spectacular Blue Flag beaches.

Important organisations are associated with most of the attractions in the region. One of those un-replaceable, very important organisations is the NSRI. We sometimes neglect to recognise the important role they play and the voluntary time given by individuals to make our time in and around the water a safer place.

In 2015 the NSRI carried out 943 missions nationally saving 760 individuals from incidents involving fishing, hiking, boating, sailing, swimming, scuba diving, kite boarding and kayaking.  They also take the initiative to educate children around the country on water safety and self-rescue techniques.

During the December holiday season whenever the emergency alarm was raised to notify sea rescue volunteers, the Plettenberg Bay residents and visitors showed support by giving way on the roads during these times.  The Plett street collection was also a huge sucsess on the 23rd of December where R73 000 was donated to Sation 14.

Thanks to Station 14 for all your hard work this past season and may you continue to be a valuable asset to this town.
